Bridging the Gap in Mathematics: A Competency Enhancement in Math
January 19 - February 17, 2015
By: Ma'am Hazel Bigueras
College of Development Education of Central Bicol State University of Agriculture in coordination of the Mathematics majors have conducted an Enhancement Program among the beginning Students of different Cooperating Schools.
Milaor National High School is one of the respondents of the said program. The mathematics student teachers made it possible.
The first thing that I did is to introduce the program and present it to the Principal. After the approval of the Principal, I talked with my Cooperating Teacher regarding that matter. We agreed that we will just start the Enhancement after the Third Grading Examination which is January 19, 2015. The students to be enhanced were identified based on their 2nd Grading Grade. After we identified, I informed them about the activity. The next day is just an orientation about what will happen in the enhancement program. Then, to determine when to start, I gave them a pre-test to test their knowledge in Math. Based on the result, I have found out that they don’t know the basics of Algebra and on how to solve equations. So, my CT and I decided that I am going to focus on Algebra.
The enhancement is scheduled every after the last period in the afternoon. It takes 30 minutes to one hour per session. During the enhancement program, I usually give 3-5 examples, afterwards I let the students answer on the board. When I saw that they don’t still understand the topic, I still give more examples and explain it to the well. After the discussion, I’m giving them evaluation to determine whether they understand it or not. The result of their quizzes is the basis if I am going to proceed to the next topic or not. Low scores means that I will re-teach, high scores means that I will proceed to the next topic.
The major problem is that, sometimes the students are not attending the enhancement and very few were left to be enhanced.
The enhancement lasted almost a month, and based on the performance of the students on regular class, I can say that they are already learning because they can already answer my questions and they even volunteer themselves to answer on the board and they are already actively participating.
There is a time that I compare the results of the quizzes of my respondents to other students and what is nice is when I see that the scores that they got is the same with other students and is even higher than them.

BICOL'S CULTURE;BICOLANO'S IDENTITY
Our culture is our identity, and whatever we have certainly reflect us. Bicolano’s are known for being courageous, a fighter, people who love spicy foods, God-fearing persons and very religious, they were devoted to Inang PenaFrancia, industrious and they were called as “ORAGON”. Aside from that, Bicolano’s has undeniably rich culture, they still have beliefs and practices that can still be seen today, which distinct in Bicol region. Just like the Dotoc and Aurora in the Rinconada area and etc.
Promoting Bicol’s culture and literature should be everybody’s concern, it must be responsible of every Bicolano. To promote, preserve, commemorate and practice the traditions, practices and beliefs that has been handed down to us by our forefathers. No matter how far we are now today we should not hesitate to look back, because our past made us who we are now today. And also with regard to our dialect, let the children learned their own dialect before engaging with other language. Teach them to appreciate Bicol literature and guide them to grow embracing their own culture, their identity.
